Growth, Unity and Diversity
AzCHOW is growing, and this was no where more evident than at the 2016 conference, where more than 240 CHWs and CHW supporters attended. The theme of this years’ conference was “Celebrating the Diversity of the CHW Workforce.”
The Joel Meister Award for Outstanding Service
A high point of the AzCHOW conference is the moment a colleague is recognized for outstanding service. What other workforce is characterized by a passion to serve the community? The award also memorializes Joel Meister: Community organizer, educator and long time CHW Champion.
This year, Berta Carbajal, ASU College of Nursing/ HOPE Network received the Joel Meister Outstanding CHW Award for her outstanding leadership in fostering the HOPE Network, and championing community health workers across the state.
“[Berta] is a major reason why the Helping Other Promotores Excel (HOPE) Network is so successful and well attended.” Lourdes Paez, Health Center Workforce Coordinator, Arizona Alliance for Community Health Centers.
Presented the award by Jill Guernsey De Zapien, UA Associate Dean for Community Programs, Berta was moved to tears.
“In my eyes, Berta is a superstar and recognition would be well deserved.” Anna Alonzo, Chief, AzDHS Office of Chronic Disease.
